Okay, you are a young professional and have big dreams to make it in your field of work. You work hard and like most ambitious people in your company, you are putting in the hours and doing more than required of you.... You do however have one thing that is bugging you ---- you are GAY. Yes GAY and are doing everything you can not to let anyone know that about you..... You are not dim? I mean hello... you do well at your work and may even be up for a promotion but you don't want people to judge you for what and who you are, so you keep it a complete secret....... Can you feel me?
Well that was me 9 years ago and since then I have learnt a few things along the way. Things that I would like to share with guys probably going through the same thing. It does not matter where you live in the world, what matters is that the issues we are dealing with as gay people are universal. I would like to open dialogue with the community and chat about these issues. I never wanted people to judge me because I was gay and that was the key thing that made me feel uncomfortable when I started my career.
I wanted my work colleague to say "he is a brilliant marketer" first BEFORE they talk about my gayness. It took me a while to get my groove and for all it's worth, I now sit in a space where my gayness is respected and there is clear understanding that my gayness has nothing to do with my work.... and they all needed to know that --- I needed not to preach about it. I had to show it.
